dionysus was the greek god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy. he was the last god to be accepted into olympus, and also the youngest and the only one to have a mortal mother. his festivals were the driving force behind the development of greek theatre.bacchus was the roman god of wine and intoxication. his festival was celebrated on march 16 and 17. the bacchanalia, orgies in his honor, were introduced in rome around 200 bce. these infamous celebrations, notorious for their sexual and criminal character, got so out of hand that they were forbidden by the roman senate in 186 bce.
